Dogs eat crumbs off the rich man's table

Posted by Eileen on Sunday 29th October 2023 at 11:41:40
The phrase “dogs eat crumbs off the rich man’s table” is a biblical reference. It appears in the book of Matthew, chapter 15, verse 27. In this verse, a Canaanite woman asks Jesus to heal her daughter. Jesus initially refuses, saying that he was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel. The woman persists, and Jesus eventually grants her request, saying that her faith is great. The woman responds with the phrase “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table” This phrase has been interpreted in different ways. I see it as a statement of humility and faith. Dogs are not haughty. They have faith that their master will feed them. Any crumb of richer food to be found under the table, is a bonus. The woman in the story is not too proud to ask Jesus to heal her daughter.
