      Truffle sniffing dogs

Posted by Eileen on Saturday 28th October 2023 at 09:35:06
I heard on the radio - SAFM 28.10.23 - that dogs are being trained to sniff for truffles. Truffles are a delicacy and are scarce in South Africa. It's a potato-shaped fungus that grows under the ground in woodlands. It has a strong smell which dogs can detect. They grow best in regions that have a long cold winter. Truffles can be used to add flavour and aroma to food.
