      Worm found in woman's brain

Posted by Eileen on Tuesday 19th September 2023 at 08:25:00
An 8cm live worm was found in the brain of an Australian woman in NSW. The patient was complaining about coughs, night sweats, and depression. Doctors were baffled. A scan showed something strange in her brain, and an astonished surgeon extracted a live worm. The worm, Ophidascaris robertsi roundworm is often found in carpet pythons - non-venomous snakes. It’s thought that the woman got the parasite from grass where a snake had defecated. This is a warning that parasites can be passed to humans from reptiles mammals, insects etc. Frequent hand washing, and washing of fruit and vegetables may help to avoid zoonotic diseases. (Zoonotic means passed from animals to humans.)
